Melanie Haberl is a predoctoral researcher in the FWF project “Emotions in Political Journalism,” led by Folker Hanusch and Sophie Lecheler. In her dissertation, she examines the emotional and relational dimensions of journalist–politician interactions in Austria, with a particular focus on how proximity and distance are negotiated within these professional relationships.
Her research is based on repeated qualitative interviews with journalists and participant observation. More broadly, she is interested in media–politics relations, the emotional dimensions of journalism, and the practices, routines, and changing institutional and societal conditions that shape political journalism. Her ongoing dissertation project received the “Förderpreis Journalismusforschung 2024,” awarded by the DGPuK Journalism Studies Division in cooperation with mijofo and the Ludwig Delp Foundation.
In 2026, she co-authored the article “(In)visible bonds: Towards a dynamic conceptualisation of emotion in journalist-politician relationships”, published in Journalism.
Before entering academia, Melanie worked for several years as a journalist and subsequently in municipal public communication. She holds a BA in European Ethnology from the University of Innsbruck and an MA in European Ethnology from the University of Vienna.
Alongside her doctoral research, she has taught at the University of Vienna and co-led an interdisciplinary project at TU Wien focusing on everyday practices of heating, cooling and ventilation and their intersections with broader questions of climate, energy, technology and health.
