Tanja Kiennast is a PhD Candidate at the Communication Science Department of the University of Vienna. She works in the Political Communication Research group, chaired by Prof. Dr. Sophie Lecheler. Her main research topics include historical media and communication research, journalism (for instance the continuity and change in campaign communication in Austria) and new information and communication technologies. In her PhD project, Tanja Kiennast researches media and responsibility in times of the climate crises. She is interested in the tension between climate-friendly behaviour and standards of living, the role media play with reference to responsibility for the anthropogenic climate crises, how responsibility is addressed by journalists in the media and how responsibility is perceived by people themselves.

Tanja Kiennast teaches two courses in the Bachelor Communication Science: Kommunikationsforschung and Qualitative Methoden. Before starting her PhD project, she completed the Masters and Bachelor in Communication Science at the University of Vienna. During her studies, she worked as a research assistant at the Communication Science Department of the University of Vienna and at the Austrian Academy of Sciences.
